When you sign up for a MessageBird account, we create a brand new workspace for you. We also give you some options to structure your account(s) and invite colleagues and other third-party users.
What is a Workspace?
A workspace offers full control and all of MessageBird's functionalities. You can add multiple workspaces and change between them. Within a workspace you can:
- Control your finances
- Purchase numbers
- Send messages
- Control voice calls usage
- Manage your contacts
- Monitor all insights tied to your workspace
- And more.
If you sign up for a MessageBird workspace, you are automatically the owner of the workspace, and you can then invite others to become users within this workspace.
Users
Users can access the workspace with their own login details. Each user will be added as an administrator and have the same rights as the owner, except only the owner can:
- Add, edit, and delete other users
- Delete the Workspace
Subaccounts
A subaccount is similar to a Workspace, with some restrictions. A subaccount can be accessed by one email address only. Subaccounts cannot add their own balance, cannot buy numbers, and have limited insight into reports and voice functionality.
When creating a subaccount you can either:
- Share the balance of the workspace with the subaccount
- Assign balance to the subaccount.
To find the perfect setup for your MessageBird account, ask yourself: What access rights and capabilities do other users need?
Depending on your use case, we recommend structuring your MessageBird account as follows:
When to add Users:
If you want colleagues to access the same workspace, view the same information, use the same products and balance and have the same operational rights as you, add them as Users to your chosen workspace.
How to add Users:
Go to your Workspace name at the upper-right corner of your Dashboard → Users
Here you can view, add, edit and delete users. New users receive an invitation via email to set up their own password.
Check out our article on How to add, edit & delete users.
When to add Subaccounts:
If different departments or customers are using the MessageBird workspace, and you want to limit their financial control and capabilities, create Subaccounts for them.
How to add Subaccounts:
Go to your Workspace name at the upper-right corner of your Dashboard → Subaccounts. Here you can view, add, edit and delete subaccounts.
Click on '+Add'. Give your subaccount a name and add the email address of the subaccount user. You'll also have to choose between sharing the balance or assigning a specific budget for the subaccount by allowing the user to manage their own balance.

When to add Workspaces:
If different departments or customers are using a MessageBird workspace and you want to give them full financial control and all capabilities, create a new, separate Workspace for them.
How to add Workspaces
Go to your Workspace name at the upper-right corner of your Dashboard → Accounts → Workspaces. Here is where you can switch between workspaces and add new ones by hitting ‘Create New Workspace’. All you have to do is choose a name for the new workspace.
